A cubic yard of soil weighs as much as a pickup truck, and trench collapses are almost always fatal to whoever they bury. This course covers the physics of a cave-in and the warning signs, soil classification by visual and manual test, all three families of protective system with their configuration limits, access and egress, the competent person's authority and daily inspection duties, underground utilities, water, hazardous atmospheres, adjacent structures, mobile equipment, and emergency response. Supports — but does not by itself confer — a competent person designation, which the employer makes based on training, experience, and authority. Issues a Migna certificate of completion.
