Formaldehyde Awareness

Formaldehyde is one of the few OSHA substance standards where the numbers that matter are expressed in two different units that share the same digits. 0.1 ppm in air starts the training obligation. 0.1 percent in solution starts the eyewash obligation. They are unrelated thresholds, and people conflate them constantly. This course covers what formaldehyde is and where it is actually met — histology and pathology, anatomy labs, embalming, resin and composite wood manufacture, foundry core rooms, textile finishing; the health effects, including the sensitisation that changes what a worker can tolerate for the rest of their career; the permissible exposure limit, the short-term exposure limit and the action level, and what each one triggers; initial and periodic monitoring, and when monitoring may stop; regulated areas and the required sign; the hierarchy of controls; respirators; the two splash thresholds that decide whether a room needs an eyewash, a drench shower, or both; emergency procedures; medical surveillance, including the medical removal protection this standard carries and most substance standards do not; labelling; and the annual training requirement. It is written for laboratory and mortuary staff, wood products and resin workers, foundry operators, textile finishers, and the supervisors who plan their work.
