Hexavalent chromium is a confirmed human carcinogen that most people exposed to it never handle as a product. It is generated — by welding stainless steel, by thermal cutting, by grinding chromate-coated surfaces, by spraying chromate primers. The welder who has never seen a drum labelled 'chromium' is frequently the most exposed person on the site. This course covers what Cr(VI) is and where it comes from; the permissible exposure limit and the action level, and what each one triggers; the standards covering general industry, construction and shipyards; exposure determination and the two ways an employer may characterise exposure; regulated areas; the hierarchy of controls as the standard applies it; respiratory protection; protective clothing and the removal rules that keep contamination out of a car; hygiene areas and practices; housekeeping, including the prohibitions on dry sweeping and compressed air; medical surveillance and what actually triggers it; and communication of hazards. It is written for welders, painters, platers, foundry and thermal cutting operators, maintenance staff and the supervisors who plan their work. Issues a Migna certificate of completion.
