Hydrogen sulfide kills more would-be rescuers than almost any other atmospheric hazard. The reason is a single cruel property: at the concentrations that become immediately dangerous, it paralyses the sense of smell. The warning disappears exactly when the danger arrives, so a worker who says 'the smell went away' may be describing the most dangerous moment of their life. This course covers the physical and chemical properties that decide where H2S goes and what it does; olfactory fatigue and paralysis, and why odour is not a control; the OSHA exposure limits, which are ceilings rather than time-weighted averages and which differ between general industry and construction; the NIOSH IDLH; where H2S is generated, including the agricultural and municipal settings that surprise people; health effects at each concentration band up to knockdown; detection, personal and fixed monitors, bump testing and calibration; alarm response and evacuation; respiratory protection and why cartridge respirators are not an answer above IDLH; and rescue, which is where most multiple-fatality events are made. There is no OSHA standard specific to H2S training. The course explains exactly which authorities do apply and where the widely used consensus practice comes from. Issues a Migna certificate of completion.
