If you stop smelling hydrogen sulfide, it just got more dangerous
Hydrogen sulfide is famous for smelling like rotten eggs. That reputation has killed people.
At low concentrations the smell is unmistakable and useful. But H2S is a nerve agent, and one of the nerves it disables is the olfactory nerve. Around 100 ppm — which coincides closely with the level NIOSH sets as immediately dangerous to life or health — the sense of smell shuts down.
So the warning signal disappears at exactly the concentration where it matters most. A worker who notices the smell fading has not walked out of the hazard. They have walked further into it.
The concentrations that matter
OSHA's limits for H2S are ceilings rather than time-weighted averages, which is unusual and tells you something about how fast this gas acts:
- General industry: a 20 ppm ceiling, with a single peak of 50 ppm permitted for no more than 10 minutes, and only if no other measurable exposure occurs that shift (1910.1000, Table Z-2). A ceiling is not an average — you may not exceed it at any moment.
- Construction (1926.55) and shipyards (1915.1000): an 8-hour limit of 10 ppm, which is a different kind of limit entirely.
Those two regimes genuinely differ, which matters if you move between construction and general industry work. Separately, NIOSH recommends a 10 ppm ceiling over any 10-minute period — a recommendation rather than an enforceable OSHA limit, and easy to confuse with the construction figure because they share a number.
For context, the odour threshold sits somewhere around 0.01 to 1.5 ppm — individual response varies a great deal — and eye irritation begins around 10 to 20 ppm, which is the region of the exposure limits. Losing the smell puts you far above all of it.
At several hundred ppm, exposure causes rapid loss of consciousness. At around a thousand, a single breath can cause immediate collapse — sometimes described as knockdown. There is no gradual warning phase at those levels and no opportunity to self-rescue.
Where it comes from
H2S is heavier than air, so it collects in low, enclosed places:
- Sewers, lift stations, and wastewater treatment
- Oil and gas production, drilling, and refining — where it is called sour gas
- Pulp and paper mills
- Tanneries
- Manure pits and confined livestock housing, which remain among the most consistently lethal H2S scenarios in the United States
Manure pits deserve their reputation. Agitation before pumping releases a slug of gas from the slurry, and the fatalities in these cases very often include more than one person.
Why so many H2S deaths are rescuers
The pattern repeats with awful regularity: one worker goes down in a pit or a tank, a coworker climbs in to help, and both die. Sometimes three or four.
The reason is that the person going in is reacting to a collapse rather than to a measurement, and the atmosphere that dropped the first person is still there. Holding your breath does not work. Moving fast does not work.
Non-entry rescue is the answer, and it has to be set up before anyone enters: a full-body harness, a retrieval line, and a mechanical device outside, so an unresponsive person can be pulled out without anyone entering. Where entry rescue is genuinely needed, it has to be arranged in advance with a team that has confirmed it can perform that specific rescue in time.
What to actually rely on
Not your nose. Not anyone's nose.
- A calibrated, bump-tested gas monitor, worn in the breathing zone. Personal monitors are cheap relative to the exposure.
- Testing before entry and continuously during it, because conditions change — especially when something is disturbed, pumped, or agitated.
- Ventilation, and confirmation that it worked, rather than an assumption that it did.
- A confined space program where the space is one, with the permit, the attendant, and the rescue arrangements that come with it.
- Supplied-air respiratory protection where it is required. An air-purifying cartridge is not adequate protection against an IDLH atmosphere.
The one thing to teach everyone
If you are working where H2S may be present and the smell goes away, treat it as an emergency and evacuate. Do not investigate it. Do not finish the task first. The absence of the smell is not the absence of the gas.
